Purchased a Dell Latitude with Windows 10. It is going through the automatic update process and spent many hours with the download/install of version 22H2. This has twice failed. Any idea what the problem might be? I have other PCs of the same model (E6420) that have updated just fine.

    Hi Alex Michaels,

Please try performing an In-place upgrade.

Disclaimer: Let’s try performing an in-place install or in-place upgrade which will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up before making large system changes. If you want to back up your data first, please do so. Once you are done backing up, you can follow the steps in the following guides: How to perform an In-place Upgrade with Windows 10 Step-by-Step Guide - Microsoft Community

After doing so, your system will get the latest build.

If you have further information, please feel free to let me know.

The most common causes for Windows 10, version 22H2 upgrade failures are corrupted update files, issues in the Windows Update cache, insufficient disk space, or services blocking the update. Use the following steps on the affected Latitude (since other identical PCs work, focus on this device’s configuration and update cache):

    1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
      1. Select Start > Settings > System.
      2. Select Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
      3. Locate Windows Update and select Run.
      4. Follow the on-screen instructions and then try the 22H2 update again.
    2. Check disk space
      • Ensure there is at least 20 GB free for a 64‑bit system. If space is low, free space using the guidance in Free up drive space in Windows, then retry the update.
    3. Clear the Windows Update cache This addresses issues where update files are corrupted (for example, error 0x8007000d or similar cache problems):
      1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
      2. Find Windows Update, right‑click it, and select Stop.
      3. Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete all files and folders inside.
      4. Go back to Services, right‑click Windows Update, and select Start.
      5. Restart the PC, then go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and attempt the 22H2 upgrade again.
    4. If the update appears stuck (0%, 51–99%, or similar)
      • Restart the PC to ensure no other applications are blocking the update.
      • Confirm the Internet connection is stable: Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Wi‑Fi and verify it is connected.
      • Run the Windows Update troubleshooter again and re‑check for updates.
    5. Apply pending restarts
      • Some updates require a restart before 22H2 can install. Select Start > Power and choose Update and restart (or Update and shut down) if shown, then try the upgrade again.

If these steps complete without errors, the Latitude should be able to install Windows 10, version 22H2 like the other PCs.
