Issues with WPS

Currently, I face difficulties when entering old documents and adding some information. First of all, I must enter with "open with" rather than open directly. I assumed it is since the WPS dominated my Microsoft 365.

Second, when I open documents directly, it cuts words at the end of the sentences due to the margins. Also, when I paste information, it is not always copied, and empty lines appear.

To restore the correct file associations, please run an Office Repair. Then double-clicking a document will open it in Word.

For your other issues, please post screen shots showing what you are seeing.

The .wps extension may actually refer to at least two different file types. It can be the old Works file format or it can be files created by WPS Office, which is a third-party Office suite (not Microsoft).

If the problem is that Word files are not properly associated with Microsoft Word, try an Office repair, as John has already suggested.

WPS is an obsolete file extension.

You can set it to open in Word directly from Windows if you want. I recommend saving the edited file directly in Word's .docx format.

WPS has likely taken over the default file association for Word documents, and there may also be formatting or compatibility issues in the documents being opened.

To address the “Open with” issue and restore Word as default:

    1. In Windows File Explorer, right-click a Word document (for example, .docx).
    2. Select Open with > Choose another app.
    3. Select Word from the list.
    4. Check Always use this app to open .docx files.
    5. Select OK.

If documents still do not open correctly, or errors appear, use the Office repair and file-repair options:

    1. Start Word.
    2. Select File > Open > Browse.
    3. Select the problematic document.
    4. Open the drop-down next to Open and choose Open and Repair. This attempts to repair damage in the file before opening it.

If the file is damaged or in an older/odd format, resaving can help:

    1. Open the file in Word.
    2. Select File > Save As > Browse.
    3. In Save as type, choose Word Document (*.docx).
    4. Give it a new name and select Save. Work in this new copy going forward.

For issues with text being cut at the end of lines or margins and strange line breaks when pasting:

    1. Confirm the document is actually editable and not in a restricted or read-only mode:
      • Go to File > Info.
      • If Protect Document shows Always Open Read-Only as enabled, select it to clear that option.
      • In the upper-right mode menu, switch from Viewing or Reviewing to Editing.
    2. If the document was originally a PDF or another non-Word format, layout problems and odd line breaks are expected. In that case:
      • Open the original file directly in its native viewer (for example, a PDF viewer) for accurate viewing.
      • If editing in Word is required, expect to adjust line breaks, spacing, and margins manually after conversion.
    3. If pasting text creates empty lines or breaks words, try pasting as plain text and then reformatting:
      • Use Paste Special (if available) and choose Unformatted Text, then apply the desired style.

If a document still will not open normally after these steps, or if errors appear, repeat the Open and Repair process and then immediately resave as a new .docx file so that the repaired version is preserved.
