WPS has likely taken over the default file association for Word documents, and there may also be formatting or compatibility issues in the documents being opened.
To address the “Open with” issue and restore Word as default:
- In Windows File Explorer, right-click a Word document (for example, .docx).
- Select Open with > Choose another app.
- Select Word from the list.
- Check Always use this app to open .docx files.
- Select OK.
If documents still do not open correctly, or errors appear, use the Office repair and file-repair options:
- Start Word.
- Select File > Open > Browse.
- Select the problematic document.
- Open the drop-down next to Open and choose Open and Repair. This attempts to repair damage in the file before opening it.
If the file is damaged or in an older/odd format, resaving can help:
- Open the file in Word.
- Select File > Save As > Browse.
- In Save as type, choose Word Document (*.docx).
- Give it a new name and select Save. Work in this new copy going forward.
For issues with text being cut at the end of lines or margins and strange line breaks when pasting:
- Confirm the document is actually editable and not in a restricted or read-only mode:
- Go to File > Info.
- If Protect Document shows Always Open Read-Only as enabled, select it to clear that option.
- In the upper-right mode menu, switch from Viewing or Reviewing to Editing.
- If the document was originally a PDF or another non-Word format, layout problems and odd line breaks are expected. In that case:
- Open the original file directly in its native viewer (for example, a PDF viewer) for accurate viewing.
- If editing in Word is required, expect to adjust line breaks, spacing, and margins manually after conversion.
- If pasting text creates empty lines or breaks words, try pasting as plain text and then reformatting:
- Use Paste Special (if available) and choose Unformatted Text, then apply the desired style.
If a document still will not open normally after these steps, or if errors appear, repeat the Open and Repair process and then immediately resave as a new .docx file so that the repaired version is preserved.
