touchpad keeps freezing

Hello,

I'm experiencing a recurring touchpad issue on my Windows laptop. The touchpad randomly stops responding and freezes — it happens multiple times a day.

What I've tried:

  • Fn + F6 to toggle the touchpad (worked the first few times, but stopped working)
  • Disabling and re-enabling the touchpad via Device Manager
  • Restarting the laptop (this fixes it temporarily but the problem comes back)

The fact that toggling the driver sometimes fixes it suggests this is a driver or software issue, not a hardware failure.

I need help with:

  1. Finding the root cause of the driver freezing
  2. A permanent fix — whether that's a driver update, Windows setting, or something else

Please advise. Thank you.

Hi, I'm Bernard. I'm happy to help!

This error occurs when there is a miscalibration with the touchpad driver or when there are unnecessary services in the background that are causing the issue. Kindly follow the steps below to sort out the problem:

    Method 1. Rollback touchpad driver:

-Press the Windows key + X

    -Go to Device Manager

-Expand the Mice and other pointing devices

    -Look for your touchpad driver

    -Right-click and click Update Driver

-Select Browse my computer for drivers

-Click Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer

-Choose an old driver or another driver name, then select it and hit next until it installs.

    -Restart the PC and check.

Method 2. Do a clean boot:

A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type msconfig and select System Configuration from the results.
    • On the Services tab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.
    • Under Startup in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then select Disable.
    • Close Task Manager.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK. When you restart the computer, it's in a clean boot environment.

Note: If the issue persists, please download and install an audio driver from your manufacturer's website.

Updating or reinstalling the touchpad driver is the primary supported way to address recurring freezing on Windows 11.

    Follow these steps in order:

    1. Update the touchpad driver via Windows Update
      • Use Windows Update to get the latest recommended touchpad driver. Updating drivers through Windows Update is the preferred method because it pulls the vendor‑submitted package that Windows has selected as the best match for the device.
      • For details on updating drivers with Windows Update, see: Automatically get recommended and updated hardware drivers.
    2. Update the touchpad driver via Device Manager
      • Open Device Manager.
      • Look for the touchpad under either:
        • Human Interface Devices, or
        • Mice and other pointing devices.
      • Right‑click the touchpad entry and choose Update driver, then follow the prompts to search automatically.
      • This uses the Windows driver ranking and selection process to pick the best available driver package for the device.
    3. Reinstall the touchpad driver via Device Manager If updating does not stop the freezing, reinstalling forces Windows to reload the driver from Windows Update.
      • In Device Manager, locate the touchpad under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
      • Right‑click the touchpad and choose Uninstall device.
      • Confirm the uninstall.
      • Restart the PC. Windows will detect the touchpad and reinstall the driver using the latest package available via Windows Update.
    4. If the problem persists after update/reinstall
      • If updating and reinstalling the touchpad driver do not resolve the freezing, the next step is to contact the device manufacturer. The OEM may have a newer or customized touchpad/Precision Touchpad driver or firmware that is not yet on Windows Update and can address intermittent freezes.

These steps address the likely software/driver cause by ensuring the correct, current driver package is selected and reinstalled cleanly. If the issue continues even with the latest OEM driver, hardware diagnostics from the manufacturer are recommended.
