My Outlook.com mailbox is showing corrupted message bodies. All emails, including new ones, display overwritten content from @QuickMailChecker_bot. POP/IMAP were previously enabled. I need a mailbox reindex and rule store reset

The described behavior (all message bodies showing overwritten content from another source) matches a known corruption pattern seen when using Outlook with IMAP/POP, where message bodies can display content from other messages or appear as garbage/unconverted MIME text.

For Outlook 2010 with IMAP, this is caused by network communication problems during synchronization, which corrupts the local message cache. The documented resolution is:

    1. Apply the Outlook hotfix that clears internal memory used during message body conversion so new messages are not affected.
    2. Repair existing corrupted items by recreating the Outlook profile so the mailbox is resynchronized from the server.

    Specifically, the guidance is:

    1. Install the Outlook update that addresses message body corruption during IMAP synchronization (for Outlook 2010 this is the hotfix described in KB 2597137).
    2. Delete and recreate the Outlook profile that was using POP/IMAP so Outlook rebuilds its local data files from the server copy of the mailbox.
      • This effectively “reindexes” the local cache by forcing a full resync.
    3. After recreating the profile, allow a complete synchronization and verify that new messages display correctly.

If corruption is visible directly in Outlook.com (web) and not only in the Outlook client, or if rules appear to be misdirecting mail, additional steps are:

    1. Check rules in Outlook.com to ensure no unexpected rules are moving or altering messages:
      • Go to Outlook.com → Rules settings and review/delete any rules that should not be there.
    2. If messages appear missing or in unexpected folders, review filters and Archive:
      • In Outlook.com, set Filter to All.
      • Check the Archive folder and move any messages back to Inbox if needed.
    3. If the problem persists in Outlook.com after client-side fixes, use Outlook.com in a different browser or with extensions disabled (ad blockers, etc.) to rule out client-side rendering issues.
    4. If mailbox content still appears corrupted in Outlook.com itself, contact Outlook.com support from the Help menu in Outlook.com and use the Still need help? flow so support can investigate and, if necessary, perform server-side remediation.

A direct “mailbox reindex” or “rule store reset” is not exposed as a self-service operation in Outlook.com; instead, the supported path is to:

    • Repair or recreate the Outlook profile and resync (for POP/IMAP clients).
    • Manually review and correct rules and filters in Outlook.com.
    • Escalate to Microsoft Support via the Outlook.com help channel if corruption is visible in the web mailbox itself.
