I have a new mini PC, mouse and keyboard. The mouse freezes quite often. What should I do?

Hi, I'm Bernard. I'm happy to help!

Does it only freeze the mouse and not the Windows or apps themselves? Have you tried to use a different mouse just to check? Are you using an external mouse or the touchpad?

While waiting, I recommend following the steps below to roll back the mouse driver:

-Press the Windows key + X

    -Go to Device Manager

-Expand the Mice and other pointing devices

    -Look for your mouse driver

    -Right-click and click Update Driver

-Select Browse my computer for drivers

-Click Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer

-Choose an old driver or another driver name, then select it and hit next until it installs.

    -Restart the PC and check.

Method 2. Do a clean boot:

A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, so that you can determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program.

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type msconfig and select System Configuration from the results.
    • On the Services tab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.
    • Under Startup in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then select Disable.
    • Close Task Manager.
    • On the Startup tab of System Configuration, select OK. When you restart the computer, it's in a clean boot environment.

Try these steps in order to troubleshoot the freezing mouse on the Windows 11 mini PC:

    1. Check power and batteries
    • If it is a wireless or Bluetooth mouse, make sure it has power.
    • Press the mouse’s pairing or power button for 5–7 seconds and check if a light blinks.
    • If there is no light or it blinks red, replace or recharge the batteries.
    1. Test the mouse on another PC
    • Connect the mouse to another PC.
    • If it also freezes or does not work there, the mouse may be faulty and might need replacing.
    1. Check basic hardware and USB
    • If it is a USB or wireless-dongle mouse:
      • Unplug the USB receiver/cable, wait a bit, then plug it back in.
      • Try a different USB port.
      • If using a USB hub, bypass it and plug directly into the PC.
      • If the receiver is on the front USB port, try a rear USB port instead.
    1. Reset or resync a wireless mouse
    • Look for a Reset or Connect button on the bottom of the mouse and/or on the USB receiver.
    • Press it to resync the mouse with the receiver.
    • For non‑Bluetooth wireless devices, also try unplugging the USB receiver for ~10 seconds and plugging it back in.
    1. Fix Bluetooth-specific issues (if it’s a Bluetooth mouse)
    • Make sure the mouse is paired correctly:
      1. Press and hold the pairing button on the mouse for 5–7 seconds until the light blinks.
      2. On the PC, go to Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
      3. Turn Bluetooth on, select Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth, choose the mouse, and complete pairing.
    • If it still freezes:
      • Turn airplane mode on for 10–15 seconds, then off again.
      • Turn off other Bluetooth devices connected to the PC to reduce interference.
      • Remove the mouse from Bluetooth & other devices, then pair it again.
      • Test the mouse with another PC to rule out a PC-side Bluetooth issue.
    1. Reduce wireless interference
    • Keep the mouse and receiver at least a few feet away from other wireless devices (cordless phones, cell phones, other wireless mice/keyboards).
    • Avoid placing the mouse or receiver directly on metallic surfaces or near long metal objects or cables.
    1. Check for delays due to power saving
    • Bluetooth mice can go into hibernation after 8–10 minutes of inactivity to save battery.
    • When using the mouse again after being idle, a short delay of a few seconds can be normal while it reconnects.
    1. Update Windows and drivers
    • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
    • If the mouse uses a specific driver, open Device Manager, find the mouse under Mice and other pointing devices, open its Driver tab, and select Update Driver.

If, after these steps, the mouse still freezes only on this mini PC and works fine on other PCs, the issue is likely with the mini PC’s USB ports, wireless environment, or Bluetooth controller and may require support from the PC manufacturer.
