On many new devices, especially in some regions, the card in the box shows a short “PIN” or “one-time code” instead of the full 25-character product key. That PIN is used online to redeem and obtain the actual license/key.

For Office 2021 on a new device (for example in Japan):

1. On the new laptop, connect to the internet.
2. Open any Office app (such as Word) and sign in with a Microsoft account when prompted.
3. When asked for a product key or PIN, enter the PIN code from the card.
4. If the PIN fails with error PIN-INAPP-INVALIDPIN-8, enter the same PIN again; Microsoft has fixed an issue that caused valid PINs to fail.
5. If it still does not work, contact Microsoft Support and provide the purchase certificate and the key/PIN card so Support can complete activation.

For Windows on the laptop:

• Windows 10/11 on new or refurbished devices is usually activated either by:
  • A digital license tied to the device (no key entry needed once online), or
  • A 25-character product key on a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) label or card.
• If Windows shows as not activated and no 25-character key is provided, use the Activation page:
  1. Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  2. If there is an option to Go to Store, use it to purchase/assign a digital license.
  3. If a COA with a 25-character key is present, select Change product key and enter that key.

If the device was sold pre-owned or refurbished and the seller did not provide a valid Windows product key/COA, a new Windows product key or license must be purchased.
