How to transfer ownership of an agent created in copilot studio

I created an agent in copilot studio for my whole team, but I will be leaving the company soon. How do I transfer ownership of the agent so that my team can continue to build on/improve the agent after I leave?

To ensure continuity after you leave, move the Copilot Studio agent from your personal environment to a shared/team-owned environment, add team members as co-owners, and transfer all related dependencies (flows, connectors, SharePoint sources, service accounts, etc.). Simply sharing the agent is not enough for long-term maintenance because edit permissions remain with the original owner.

Ownership of Copilot Studio agents can be reassigned by an administrator; it cannot be directly transferred by the current owner.

There are two primary options, depending on how the agent is managed in the organization:

1. Reassign via Microsoft 365 admin center (Agent registry)
   For Copilot Studio agents that appear in the Agent 365 registry:
   1. An IT administrator signs in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
   2. Go to Agent 365 → Agent registry (or Agents → All agents, depending on the view).
   3. Filter by platform to show Copilot Studio agents and select the relevant agent.
   4. In the agent details pane, choose Assign new owner.
   5. Enter the colleague (new owner) from the organization and select Assign.
   After reassignment:
   • The new owner gets full edit and delete permissions and access to any files previously uploaded for the agent.
   • The previous owner loses all access, including read rights.
2. Reassign using Power Platform / Copilot Studio admin capabilities
   For Copilot Studio agents managed via Power Platform:
   • Admins with roles such as Global tenant administrator, AI administrator, Power Platform administrator, or Environment administrator can reassign ownership using the Power Platform API or related admin tools.
   • When ownership is reassigned:
     • The new owner must have a Copilot Studio license and be a member of the environment.
     • The new owner receives Environment Maker permissions for that environment.
     • The previous owner loses access; co-owners are unaffected.

In all cases, coordinate with the organization’s Microsoft 365 or Power Platform admin before leaving so they can perform the reassignment and ensure the agent remains governed and maintainable.
