Windows 11 upgrade removed programs

I unwillingly gave in to the relentless interruptions to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11. As I feared, some of the older programs that I use regularly are gone. I didn't realize there were missing programs until I tried to use my printer today and the shortcuts on the desktop are no longer there. I then looked at the list of programs and the Icon is not there either. I don't have time to deal with this. I have not looked to see just how many programs were deleted. I'm sure this is a common issue. What options do I have in restoring my programs?

Usually when you perform the upgrade from Windows 10 to 11, at the start of the process, if there is any applications installed that would be incompatible with Windows 11, there would be a notification that the upgrade would remove the listed applications, otherwise, the upgrade should not remove any of your applications.

How long has it been since you performed the upgrade to Windows 11, is it less than 10 days, and if the shortcuts have disappeared on your Desktop, if you perform a search for a missing application on the Taskbar search box, does that no longer find the application?

During an upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, some apps can be removed automatically if they are known to cause upgrade problems or are not compatible with Windows 11.

There are three main options to restore or work around this:

    1. Check if you can roll back to Windows 10
If the upgrade was very recent (generally within about 10 days):
      1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
      2. If available, select Go back and follow the prompts.
This keeps personal files but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and may restore the environment where those older programs worked. Note that apps added, removed, or updated after the upgrade might not function properly after going back.
    2. Reinstall missing programs
If rolling back is not available or not desired:
      • Reinstall programs from their original installation media or from the publisher’s official website, preferably versions that support Windows 11.
      • For software available in Microsoft Store, open Microsoft Store from the taskbar or by searching for Microsoft Store, then download and install the apps again.
      • For older software that has no Windows 11 version, it may not be compatible and might not work correctly even if reinstalled.
    3. Check for compatibility workarounds for older apps
Some older apps can be made to work on newer Windows versions using compatibility options. If an app installs but does not run correctly, use the compatibility tools described in the Windows compatibility guidance to adjust settings so the app can run more reliably on the latest Windows version.

For the printer specifically, reinstalling the printer software/driver from the manufacturer’s site or from Windows Update is usually required after a major upgrade.
