You insert cross-references via the Cross-reference dialog box as indicated by other contributors. After you have edited the document, in case the edits have affected your cross-references, you must update the references. The quickest way is to display the print preview (Ctrl+P) and then exit the preview with ESC.

    Hi!

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

"Insert Cross-reference" is currently available in Word and there is no need to add this command separately to the ribbon toolbar.

You can have a look on this link on how to create a cross-reference.

In current Word versions, Insert Cross-reference is already available on the ribbon and does not need to be added manually as a separate command.

To use it dynamically for cross-references:

    1. Create the items to be referenced first (for example, headings, figures with captions, bookmarks, footnotes, or endnotes).
    2. Place the cursor where the cross-reference should appear and type any leading text (for example, See Figure).
    3. Go to the Insert tab on the ribbon.
    4. Select Cross-reference.
    5. In Reference type, choose what to link to (for example, Heading, Figure, Table, Bookmark, Footnote, Endnote, etc.).
    6. In Insert reference to, choose the information to insert (for example, the entire caption, only the label and number, or the page number).
    7. In For which, select the specific item from the list.
    8. To make the reference clickable, check Insert as hyperlink.
    9. If available and desired, check Include above/below to add relative position text.
    10. Click Insert.

The cross-reference is inserted as a field. It updates automatically when the referenced item changes (for example, if heading numbers or page numbers change). If field codes such as { REF _Ref… } appear instead of normal text, press Alt+F9 or right-click the code and choose Toggle Field Codes to show the result.

To use cross-references across multiple documents without hyperlinks, first combine the documents into a single master document and then insert cross-references there.
