To install a work program on Windows 11, first confirm whether it is a Microsoft 365/Office app or another business app that depends on Office or Microsoft 365.
If it is Microsoft 365/Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) provided by work:
- Sign in with the work or school account
- Go to the Microsoft 365 home page and sign in with the work or school account.
- If there is no Install button on the home page, go directly to the Microsoft 365 Software page at https://aka.ms/office-install.
- Install Office
- On the Microsoft 365 Software page, choose language and bit version (32-bit or 64-bit), then select Install.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow the prompts until installation completes.
- If there is no option to install
- The work account might not have a license assigned or installation permissions enabled.
- Contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 admin to:
- Confirm a license that includes desktop apps is assigned.
- Confirm software download/installation is allowed for the account.
If it is a non-Office business program that requires admin rights (for example, SQL Server or similar tools):
- Make sure the Windows account has full administrator rights
- Installation of many business tools requires an account with full local administrator rights.
- If the current sign-in is not an administrator, contact the IT department to perform the installation.
- Clean up previous failed installs (IT/administrator task)
- Uninstall any previous failed installations of the program and its dependencies.
- If the program created folders under
C:\Program Files\..., delete the specific program folder after uninstalling.
- Restart the computer.
- Install from a local folder
- Move the installer file (for example, for SQL or another business app) directly to
C:\.
- While signed in with an administrator account, run the installer from
C:\ and complete setup.
- Restart again if the installer requests it.
- Test with the work account
- After installation, sign back in with the normal work account on the PC.
- Open the program while IT is available so they can troubleshoot if there are permission or configuration issues.
If installation still fails or shows an error message, contact the work IT support or Microsoft 365 admin and provide the exact error text and at which step it appears so they can use admin tools and support options to resolve it.
