    Hello

Did you buy it from third party? IF so, unfortunately with an error like this, you would need to dispute with the seller you got it from. Microsoft cannot be responsible for third party keys.

    Hi, Nathaniel.

You may have bought a grey-market product key, or an illegitimate key. If Settings says the key is already in use, then that means it is most likely from an illegitimate source. If you can provide a screenshot, that would be great.

You should only buy a product key from Microsoft officially or an AppSource partner, which you can find an official MSFT partner here

A Windows product key can only be used on the number of devices allowed by the Microsoft Software License Terms. If a new Windows Pro key reports that it has already been used, it typically means one of the following:

    1. The key has already been activated on another PC (or more PCs than allowed).
    2. The key was reused (for example, on a pre-owned PC or after repair) beyond its allowed activations.
    3. The key may be counterfeit or resold improperly.

    Steps to take:

    1. Confirm the source of the key
      • If the key was purchased from a third-party seller, verify that it is a genuine, unused key. Counterfeit or resold keys often show as already used.
    2. Check whether Windows is already activated by another method
      • On the device, go to Settings → Update & Security → Activation (or the equivalent in Windows 11) and check if there is already a digital license or another product key in use.
    3. Ensure the key is not being used on multiple PCs
      • If the same key was used on another PC, that can block activation on the new one. Each PC generally needs its own license.
    4. If the PC is pre-owned
      • If this is a used PC, the previous owner may have reused the key on other devices. In that case, a new product key or copy of Windows is required.
    5. Contact the seller or Microsoft Support
      • If the key was sold as “new” but shows as already used, contact the seller for a replacement or refund.
      • If there is suspicion of fraud or counterfeit software, use Microsoft’s “How to Tell” resources to verify genuineness and then purchase a valid license if needed.

If activation previously worked on this device and hardware was recently changed (for example, motherboard replacement), use the Microsoft account-linked digital license and the activation troubleshooter to reactivate instead of reusing the product key.
