A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Cloud backup in Microsoft Authenticator only syncs certain data and has limitations that explain what is being seen.
- On Android, to back up accounts from the phone:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator on the phone.
- Tap the menu (⋮ or ☰) > Settings.
- Under Backup, turn on Cloud Backup.
- Choose a Microsoft personal account where the backup will be stored and confirm.
- On the Galaxy Tab (also Android), to restore:
- Install and open Microsoft Authenticator.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft personal account used for backup.
- Follow the prompts to restore the backup.
- What will and will not restore:
- Microsoft personal accounts that use only a 30‑second one‑time password (OTP) code: the OTP codes are restored.
- Microsoft personal accounts that also use passwordless sign‑in: only the account name is restored; each account must be signed in again.
- Work or school accounts: only the account name is restored; each must be signed in again.
- Third‑party OTP accounts (Amazon, Facebook, Gmail, etc.): OTP codes are restored.
- If backup still appears empty on the tablet:
- On the phone, confirm Cloud Backup is turned on and shows a recent backup.
- If the wrong backup account was used, on the phone go to Settings > Backup, turn Cloud Backup off to delete the backup, then turn it on again and select the correct Microsoft account.
- On the tablet, make sure Authenticator is signed into that same Microsoft account under Settings > Backup.
If accounts still do not appear after these steps, they must be added again manually on the tablet.
