    Hello,

Check with Device Manager, make sure IR based webcam is installed and working properly.

Fix: Facial recognition not working in Windows 11

I also recommend to facial recognition driver, which you can locate under Biometric devices.

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Try reinstalling the camera and IR sensor drivers from Device Manager and check whether facial recognition starts working again.

    1. Open Device Manager.
    2. Expand the arrow next to Cameras.
    3. Right-click your integrated camera device, select Uninstall device, check Attempt to remove the driver software for this device, and then click Uninstall.
    4. Once the device is uninstalled, restart your computer.
    5. Repeat the same process for the IR sensor drivers.
    6. After both restarts, check whether facial recognition works again.

    If it doesn't work,

type msinfo in the search bar on the taskbar and click Enter.

Post a screenshot of the resulting dialog box.

Windows Hello facial recognition can become unavailable for several reasons, typically related to camera issues, lighting/appearance changes, or configuration.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Check the camera and hardware
      • Make sure the camera lens is clean and not blocked.
      • If the device has a physical shutter or privacy slider over the camera, open it.
      • If there is a function key with a camera icon, press it (or Fn + that key) to enable the camera.
      • If the camera still doesn’t work in other apps (like Camera), install the latest camera/webcam drivers from the device manufacturer’s support page.
    2. Check lighting and appearance
      • Avoid very bright backlighting or harsh light from one side; move to more even lighting.
      • Remove hats or accessories that cast shadows on the face.
      • If makeup, glasses, or facial hair have changed significantly since setup, Windows Hello may struggle to recognize the face.
    3. Improve or reconfigure Windows Hello Face
      • Sign in with PIN or password.
      • Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
      • Under Windows Hello Face / Facial Recognition (Windows Hello):
        • First select Improve recognition and follow the prompts to rescan the face. This adds another template and often restores reliability.
        • If that does not help, select Remove, then Set up to configure facial recognition again.
    4. Run the Windows Hello troubleshooter (if available)
      • From the Windows Hello help page, use the Run the troubleshooter / Run Windows Hello troubleshooter link to automatically detect and fix some issues.
    5. Check for policy or admin controls (work/school devices)
      • On managed devices, IT may have enabled stricter anti-spoofing or security policies that can disable or restrict facial recognition, especially in low light.
      • If this is a work or school PC and Windows Hello Face remains unavailable, contact the administrator.
    6. Update Surface firmware (if using Surface)
      • On Surface devices, open the Surface app, go to Help & support, and install any available driver/firmware updates, then test Windows Hello again.

If, after these steps, Windows Hello still reports facial recognition as unavailable, the camera hardware may be faulty and the device manufacturer or repair service should be contacted.
