The product key entry itself is probably not the issue; the problem is usually either:
- The key is for a different Office product/version than the one being installed.
- The key has not been properly activated by the seller.
- There is a temporary issue with the Office setup service.
Work through these checks:
- Confirm the product the key belongs to
- If the key is for an older version (for example Office 2010), it cannot be used on the newer Office.com/setup site for download. Older-version keys must be used with the media or method specified for that version.
- Keys for individual apps (for example Word only) cannot be used to install a full Office suite, and vice versa.
- Volume license keys (often provided by schools/companies, or labeled “Professional Plus”) cannot be used on the retail setup site and must be handled by the organization’s IT or via volume-licensing tools.
- Check for typing mistakes
- Carefully re‑enter the 25‑character key and watch for these common errors:
- B vs 8
- G vs 6
- O or Q vs 0
- VV vs W
- If the key came by email from an online retailer, copy and paste it instead of typing.
- If the site says the key is not valid or similar
- If you see messages like “product key isn’t valid” (INVALID_PRODUCT_KEY or ERR_INVALID_TOKEN) on Office.com/setup or Microsoft365.com/setup, and you are sure it is typed correctly, the key may not be recognized for download from that site (for example, it is for an older version or a volume license).
- If the message is that the key is not valid when activating Office after installation, the key may have been blocked (for example, if it was stolen or fraudulently obtained). In that case, the remedy is to contact the seller for a refund and, if needed, purchase Office again from a trusted source.
- If the message is “try again later” or “service unavailable”
- This can indicate a temporary issue with the Office setup service or CDN. In such cases there is nothing to fix locally; waiting and trying again later is required.
- If the problem persists over many days, contact Microsoft Support directly and provide the exact error text shown on the setup page.
- If Office was purchased from Microsoft Store
- Instead of using the product key directly, sign in at the Microsoft account Order history page and use Product key/install or Install next to the Office purchase to download and install. Some purchases do not expose the key at all and are installed only via the account page.
If, after confirming the correct product, re‑entering the key, and trying at different times, the key still cannot be used to download or activate Office, the next step is to contact the retailer to verify and, if necessary, replace or refund the key.
