Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. Did the laptop come with Microsoft 365 or Office Home & Student/Home & Business?
    2. Are you signing in with a personal Microsoft account or a work/school account?
    3. At what point do you see the "IllegalAttachRecordState" error? During installation, activation, or when opening an Office app?

I have seen cases where this error occurs because the Office edition installed does not match the license included with the laptop. For example, the device came with Office Home & Student, but Microsoft 365 was installed instead.

If you haven't already, please also try these steps:

    • Open any Office app and sign out of all accounts.
    • Restart the PC.
    • Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and check if multiple versions of Office are installed. If so, uninstall the one you are not using.
    • Run an Online Repair for Office (Control Panel > Programs and Features > Microsoft Office > Change > Online Repair).

Let me know the exact Office product that came with the laptop and whether the error appears during installation or activation.

The "IllegalAttachRecordState" error usually occurs during Microsoft Office activation or account setup. Try signing out of all Microsoft accounts, restarting the computer, and then signing back in with the account that is associated with your Office license. Also make sure Windows and Office are fully updated. If Office came preinstalled on the laptop, verify that the license has been redeemed with the correct Microsoft account. If the issue continues, run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) to diagnose and fix Office activation problems.
