Control center for some Brother printers, which you launch from the system tray, has items to select the type of scan. It may show type "File" for scanning to PDF.

Some newer Brothers no longer include that. The iPrint and Scan utility replaced it and can be downloaded an installed from Brother at

Additionally, Paper Port is available to install for some models.

All of these have options to select the type of can (JPG, PDF, etc.)

The Windows Scan utility mentioned in the AI answer is also an option and is available for free here -

To scan to PDF instead of JPEG with a Brother scanner on Windows 11, configure the scan settings in the Windows Scan app or in the Brother software (if installed). The Windows Scan app supports multiple file types, including PDF.

Use the Windows Scan app as follows:

    1. Make sure the Brother scanner is installed and appears under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
    2. Turn the scanner on and place the document on the flatbed or in the feeder.
    3. Right-click the Start menu, select Search, and type Windows Scan.
    4. Select Scan from the search results. If it does not appear, install Windows Scan from Microsoft Store using the provided Windows Scan link.
    5. In the Scan app:
      • In Scanner, select the Brother device.
      • In Source, choose Flatbed, Feeder, or Auto-configured as appropriate.
      • In File type, choose PDF instead of JPEG.
      • Optionally select Show more and set Save file to to choose the folder where PDFs will be stored.
    6. Select Scan. The document is scanned and automatically saved as a PDF in the selected folder (or the default Pictures/Scans folder if none is chosen).

If using Brother’s own scan utility, look for a similar File type or Save as type option in that software and select PDF there.
