I need to add a second user name to my account, but the website keeps saying, "There's a temporary problem with the service. Please try again. If you continue to get this message, try again later." I can't reach customer service.

The user names are not remotely similar.

What type of second username are you using?

Are you using Add Alias > Create new, or add existing?

How long have you been getting this error? Like days, or just today?

The error message indicates a temporary service problem when managing aliases/usernames on a Microsoft account, not a conflict between the names.

For Outlook.com/Microsoft accounts, try these steps:

    1. Wait and retry later
      • This specific message often appears when the alias service is temporarily unavailable. Wait some time and try again later in the day.
    2. Add a different alias and set it as primary
      • Sign in to the Microsoft account website.
      • Go to Your infoManage how you sign in to Microsoft.
      • Select Add email or Add phone number.
      • Follow the prompts to add and verify a new alias.
      • After it’s added, select Make primary next to the new alias if the goal is to use it as the main sign‑in name.
Note: An alias cannot be added if it is already associated with another Microsoft account, and existing @hotmail.com, @live.com, @outlook.com, and @msn.com addresses cannot be reused as aliases on a different account.
    3. If the alias is a work/school address
      • If the alias you are trying to use matches an existing work or school account in Microsoft 365/Azure AD, rename your personal account to something else:
        • Sign in to the Your Info page.
        • Select Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
        • Under Account aliases, add a personal email address if needed and set it as (primary alias).
        • Remove the conflicting work/school email address from the account.

If the service error persists across different browsers, devices, and times, contact Microsoft Support via the official support entry points (for example, from another account) and report that the alias/username management page is returning the ADDriverStore/temporary service error.
