Hello,

I am having difficulty using my Microsoft Authenticator to log into my work account. When I enter the authenticator code, my work website says the code is invalid. Thank you.

    Hello

If the code is entered wrong, or if you used the wrong code in the app, it will give you this error.

Is this a work account assigned to you by work, or a free outlook.com/hotmail.com address used for work purposes?

The "code is invalid" message usually means the verification input does not match what the system expects, or there is an issue completing authentication. Try these steps in order:

    1. Confirm the correct verification method
      • If the site is asking for a code from a text message (SMS), make sure the code being entered is from the SMS, not from Microsoft Authenticator.
      • If the site is asking for a code from Microsoft Authenticator, ensure the code is taken from the correct account entry in the app.
    2. If using phone call or SMS verification
When using Azure Multi-Factor Authentication with call or text:
      • For phone call: respond by pressing the pound key (#) when prompted. If another key is pressed or the call is not completed correctly, the system treats it as invalid input.
      • For text message: carefully enter the exact verification code received. Any typo or expired code will be rejected.
      • If available, select Other verification options on the sign-in screen and try a different method (call vs. text vs. app), and verify that the phone numbers in the account settings are correct.
    3. If using the Microsoft Authenticator app
      • Make sure the app is unlocked on the device before trying to approve or enter a code.
      • Ensure notifications are enabled so prompts are not missed.
      • Confirm that the app is up to date and the device has a working internet connection.
      • Check that the device’s date and time are set correctly (automatic time is recommended), as incorrect time can cause time-based codes to be seen as invalid.
    4. If you see “Authentication did not complete” or similar
      • Unlock the Authenticator app and try again.
      • Verify that notifications are not silenced or blocked.
      • If the app is outdated, install the latest version.
      • Check network connectivity (try switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data).
    5. If multiple attempts keep failing
      • Too many failed sign-in attempts can trigger Microsoft Entra multifactor protection and temporarily block further attempts. In that case, wait before trying again or use a different MFA method if one is configured.
      • If unable to sign in after multiple attempts, contact the organization’s IT administrator or Help desk and ask them to review the Microsoft Entra sign-in logs and, if needed, reset the MFA settings for the account.

If the account is a work or school account and there is no alternative method and no admin who can reset MFA, the organization’s admin must work with Microsoft support (Data Protection team) to restore access.
