Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
IMAP passwords are the same as the account passwords for the email service being used. They cannot be viewed or supplied by support; they can only be reset using the provider’s official password-recovery tools.
For Microsoft/Outlook-type accounts in New Outlook for Windows, use these steps:
- If this is a Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, MSN, etc.), reset or recover the password using the official tools:
- After the account password is reset, use the new password when adding or updating the IMAP account in Outlook.
- If Outlook or the provider asks for an “app password” (common for IMAP accounts with extra security), follow the provider’s instructions to generate an app password and enter that in Outlook instead of the main password. For example, some providers require app passwords for IMAP access in New Outlook.
If the IMAP account is from another provider (Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, etc.), reset the password or create an app password on that provider’s site, then use it in Outlook.
