I wish to delete an endnote and renumber the next endnote. But when I delete the first endnote, the second one is not automatically renumbered

How was the endnote created? Is it possible that the document was converted into .docx from another file format?
No the endnote was created from a single .docx document. I have also ensured that track changes is set to 'no mark up'.

Thanks for the follow-up. And there is no chance that the .docx file was created in some other app than Microsoft Word (which could lead to a damaged document)?
See Bob's suggestion to ensure that the endnote marker has in fact been deleted. If you just deleted the endnote text, the endnote itself will remain and no renumbering occurs.
Are you deleting the endnote, itself? That's the most common reason.
Delete the endnote number in the body of the document. The corresponding endnote will also be removed & the remainder renumbered accordingly.
