locked word documents

my words documents are locked and I cannot edit. Please unlock

Please check this:

Open Word > File > Account. Look under Product Information. Does it say Product Activated, Subscription Product, Unlicensed Product, Product Activation Failed, or View Only?

If you see an activation or license problem, try this: Sign out of Word, close all Office apps, then open Word again and sign back in with the Microsoft account that owns your Office license.

If there is an Update License button on the File > Account page, click that.

You can also repair Office:

Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office > Modify > Online Repair.

An old version of Office normally should not lock all documents by itself, but if the old Office install is no longer activated or is not linked to a valid license, Word can block editing.

What does Word show under File > Account > Product Information?

Hi John,

All of my word documents are locked. There are no messages at the top. In the lower left of my laptop, when I try to edit any document a message appears "you can't make changes because this section is locked. I am the only one who uses this computer. I have not used a password in any of my documents.

Dont know if the old version of Microsoft is the reason my documents are locked

To help narrow down the issue:

1. Does this happen with all Word documents or only one specific file?
2. Do you see any message at the top, such as “Protected View,” “Read Only,” “Unlicensed Product,” or “Your account doesn’t allow editing on a Mac/PC”?

If it is only one document, go to Review > Restrict Editing. If protection is enabled, you will need the password from whoever locked the file
