I just need to enable voice search and this pc is sending me around in circles

Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone → make sure "Microphone access" is ON and "Let apps access your microphone" is ON

Settings → Time & Language → Speech → toggle "Online speech recognition" ON

Click the taskbar search box, you should see a mic icon — tap it, or press Win + H to trigger voice typing anywhere

To enable voice search (voice access) on a Surface Laptop running Windows 11, use these steps:

1. Open Start > Settings.
2. Select Accessibility.
3. Select Speech.
4. Turn on the Voice access switch.
5. If desired, check Start voice access before you sign in to your PC or Start voice access after you sign into your PC so it’s always ready.

After it’s on, you can use voice to control the PC and search (for example, by saying commands to open Start or apps, then dictating what to search).

If Settings is hard to find, you can also:

1. Open Windows search and type voice access.
2. Select Open to start voice access.
3. Optionally choose Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar so it’s easier to get to next time.

If the goal is more general voice recognition (dictation/commands), also ensure a microphone is set up:

1. Select Start > Settings > Time & Language > Speech.
2. Under Microphone, select Get started and follow the setup.
