I have a Word document which is divided into chapters. I would like to put endnotes for each chapter at the end of the chapter, rather than at the end of the document. Is there a way to do this?

Hello, I am Mite, and I am here to help.

Yes, Word can place endnotes at the end of each chapter, but each chapter needs to be in its own section. Word does not treat headings alone as chapter endings for endnote placement.

At the end of each chapter, insert a section break by going to Layout > Breaks > Next Page under Section Breaks. After your chapters are separated into sections, go to References, click the small arrow in the Footnotes group, and under Endnotes, change the location from End of document to End of section.

If you also want the numbering to restart in each chapter, change Numbering to Restart each section in the same dialog box.

After applying this, the endnotes for each chapter should appear at the end of that chapter’s section instead of all being collected at the end of the document.
