A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
To reset the password and sign in without access to the Microsoft Authenticator app, follow the path that matches the current situation.
1. If there is still access to at least one security method (phone or email)
Because two-step verification is turned on, password reset requires two verification methods.
- Go to the Microsoft account password reset page: select Forgotten your password? on the sign-in page or use Reset password from the article.
- Enter the email address (Microsoft mail ID) and select Next.
- Choose the available verification option (SMS or email) and get the first code.
- Enter the first code.
- When asked for the second verification (such as Authenticator), look for an option like I don’t have any of these or similar wording.
- Follow the on‑screen steps to replace or update security info. When security info is replaced, there is a 30‑day wait before normal sign‑in is allowed.
During those 30 days, if the old security info (old phone, old Authenticator) becomes available again, it can still be used to sign in, but doing so cancels the update.
2. If there is no access to any security info (no phone, no email, no Authenticator)
If none of the verification options can be used:
- Start sign‑in to the Microsoft account.
- At the Verify your identity prompt, select I don’t have any of these.
- Follow the instructions to replace all security info.
- After completing this, sign‑in will be blocked for 30 days while Microsoft protects the account and confirms the change.
If the password itself is forgotten and there is no usable security info, use the Microsoft account recovery form as described in the verification-code troubleshooting article. Provide as much accurate information as possible about the account.
3. Important limitations
- When two-step verification is enabled, Microsoft cannot bypass it or reset the account from support; agents are not allowed to send password reset links or change account details.
- If no verification method or recovery information can be accessed or replaced, the account cannot be recovered.
For ongoing use, once access is restored, consider adding multiple security methods (phone, backup email, Authenticator) so that losing one method does not block sign‑in.
