Multiple monitors changing randomly

I have triple monitors connected to my HP Envy laptop. One monitor is the laptop screen, one is an HP monitor connected by HDMI with USB extender and one if an old Vizio TV monitor connected by HDMI. Frequently, the screens jump between the monitors, then flicker back in place. Set up is laptop and HP monitor are 1/3, Vizio monitor is 2. Any suggested fix?

Before troubleshooting further, could you please clarify:

Does this happen only when the laptop is connected to power, or both on battery and AC power?
Are the monitors connected through a USB docking station/USB display adapter, or directly to the laptop's video ports?

Thank you for replying. I have only tried the multi-monitor set up with the laptop plugged in. Each monitor is connected to the laptop -- one via an HDMI cable to the laptop HDMI port and one via an HDMI cable to a USB extender, which is connected to a laptop USB port.

I have the same problem. Just started happening this week. I plug my laptop into a dock with just 1 screen, and it moves the monitor order. I fix it and it remains fine until I next unplug and plug in again.

I tried restarting the laptop when it was set correctly. It booted up correct, but I went away to get coffee and on return, it had swapped them around again.

Same issue happened in my office. 3 screens all suddenly in the wrong order when I plug in. That has been working fine for 3 straight years and now suddenly Windows can't remember the order

Thank you for sharing. You can try the step below to see if the issue is resolved:

Check for display driver updates

Press Windows + X and select Device Manager

Expand Display adapters

Right-click the graphics adapter and select Update driver

Disable automatic monitor reconfiguration

Open Settings > System > Display

Scroll down and expand Multiple displays

Enable Remember window locations based on monitor connection

Check display cables and adapters

Reseat both HDMI connections

If possible, test with a different HDMI cable, especially for the Vizio TV and the USB-to-HDMI extender

Set a consistent refresh rate

Open Settings > System > Display

Select each external display

Open Advanced display and verify the refresh rate is set appropriately for each monitor

Emma, when reseating the HDMI cables I switched the HDMI to USB to a different USB port. I worked yesterday afternoon without a flicker! Thank you for your assistance..

Emma,

Hopes springs eternal, but sadly the jumping from screen to screen resumed today. Can you give me more information about how to determine what the appropriate refresh rate is for each monitor?

Hi Karla Spaulding

Please try setting all three screens to 60 Hz, if available. If the issue continues, temporarily disconnect the USB-to-HDMI adapter. If the remaining screens stay stable, the adapter, its driver, or the USB port is more likely causing the reconnection and rearrangement.
