We purchased a laptop as a family computer, set up a parent admin account and then 4 user accounts. Can we have one active Microsoft 365 subscription and utilize Word, Excel, etc. across all user accounts?

Yes, One subscription can be shared with up to 6 people (including the purchaser).

Each person uses their own Microsoft account.

    Each person gets their own:

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, etc.

    1 TB of OneDrive storage.

    Personal settings and files.

Each person can install the apps on multiple devices.

    So in your situation:

    Parent/admin account = subscription owner.

Four additional household members = invited to share the subscription.

Total users = 5, which is within the 6-person limit.

Yes. If you purchased Microsoft 365 Family, one subscription can be shared with up to 5 other people, for 6 users total. Microsoft 365 Personal is only for 1 user.

On the family laptop, the subscription owner should go to https://account.microsoft.com/services/office/sharing and invite the other 4 Microsoft accounts.

After each person accepts the invite, they can sign in to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. with their own Microsoft account under their own Windows user profile.

Each person keeps their own files, settings, and OneDrive storage separate.

It might help to understand that Microsoft 365 is one of the many features of a Microsoft account. When you subscribe to Microsoft 365, your subscription belongs to the Microsoft account that you used to subscribe to Microsoft 365. It does not belong to you. You are the owner of your Microsoft account, and your Microsoft account is the owner of your subscription to Microsoft 365.

Microsoft's rule is: Each Microsoft account can sign in to Microsoft 365 on up to 5 different devices simultaneously. Microsoft 365 Personal allows only one Microsoft account to use Microsoft 365. Microsoft 365 Family allows 6 different Microsoft accounts to use Microsoft 365.

In your case, it seems like you - or rather, your Microsoft account - installed Microsoft 365 on your computer - that's one device - and setup user accounts for each of the family. There's no limit to the number of user accounts you can have on a computer, and therefore there is no limit to the number of family members who can use Microsoft 365 on that computer. But keep in mind that all those user accounts are signed in to the same Microsoft account so you are all using the same copy of Microsoft 365.
