Unable to Activate Microsoft 365 Subscription – Error Code 0x0

Today, Microsoft Word and Excel started displaying the following message:

"Subscription required to edit and save. Start your free one-month trial of Microsoft 365 or sign in to activate an existing subscription."

I clicked Activate and tried to sign in with my existing Microsoft 365 subscription. After entering the verification code sent by Microsoft, I received the following error message:

"An unknown error has occurred. The error code is 0x0."

I have tried signing in multiple times, but I keep getting the same error.

I have already checked my Microsoft 365 subscription, and it is valid until August 20, 2026. I even purchased an additional one-year subscription to make sure the issue was not related to my account, but the problem still persists.

At the moment, I am unable to edit or save documents in Word and Excel, which is preventing me from doing my work. I would appreciate your assistance in resolving this issue as soon as possible.

Thank you, yes I just noticed Microsoft has also recommended that:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/update-microsoft-365-or-office-on-your-macos-or-ios-device-f418ae5d-bb5f-4078-b3d9-9340f5dd084e

    Update your OS

Prior to updating your Office apps, you need to ensure that you are running macOS 12 (Monterey) or later on your Mac, or iOS 17 or later on your iPad/iPhone.

    macOS:

    To update your Mac:

Go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.

Your reply will surely help others with the same issue. Have a great day!

    Hi,

Sincere apologies for the trouble you are having. I am seeing a lot of similar issues today, so something on the backend is causing this.

I'm going to run through a few steps with you. Some of these are diagnostic — they help me narrow down what's wrong, not fix it outright. So if nothing changes after a step, that's normal and expected, not a dead end. I'll keep going until we've got this resolved.

    1. Is it MS office for Mac?
    2. May I know the Mac version you are running?
    3. Is it a Microsoft 365 subscription or an Office standalone?

I look forward to hearing from you to get the results of the troubleshooting.

Thank you. Microsoft supports 2 versions of MacOS, and Monterey is very old.

Could you please remove MS Office, use the 16.88 version from this link and see:
