Windows Activation Issue Despite Having Valid Key

Hello,

I recently had to swap out the motherboard in my PC, as the old one died, and now, Windows is not recognizing my product key despite it being legitimate and in my purchase history.

When I run the troubleshooter and select "I changed hardware on this device recently," it brought me to an HTML-less page, where I then clicked "See other devices linked to your Microsoft Account," which leads me to a blank page. There is only 1 PC under "Devices" in my microsoft account, that being the one I'm trying to activate Windows on.

I have tried:

  • Manually setting the key in both the Registry Editor and through an elevated Command Prompt, via slmgr /ipk
  • Linking the PC to my Microsoft Account
  • Resetting the registry key to the default, and then manually reinstalling Windows with my new product key.
  • The most common error I have received is 0x803F7001.

Nothing has worked so far. Assistance would be wonderful.

    Hi Cinder,

I can understand how frustrating it is to fail to activate your Windows license after replacing the failed motherboard, especially when contacting Support seems to lead you into loop. However, since the issue involve license and account purchase, Microsoft Support is the only team who can access the backend system to check. I have some workarounds you can consider here:

1 - Try the Microsoft product self-activation portal

    • Sign into https://visualsupport.microsoft.com/ (captcha)
    • Choose Activate a Microsoft Product > Windows > Windows 11
    • Enter Installation ID (find by clicking Help me find Installation ID)
    • Follow the onscreen instructions to attempt activating Windows license.

2 - Contact Support through another path

    • Visit Contact Us - Microsoft Support > Sign in
    • Type in your problem > click Get Help to make request
    • Scroll to the bottom > click Contact Support > Windows and Confirm
    • If you don't see chat option, change to other categories and request escalate.

Note: The support contact team only works at certain times, so if the last window shows that it's unavailable, try opening it again the next day. If you prefer phone support, you can leave a phone number. This way, they can call you and help you.

I wish I could provide more direct help, but so far it seems you've already exhausted the normal activation methods and troubleshooting steps. At this stage, you likely need a manual license review, and only Microsoft Support can verify the purchase attached to your Microsoft account and determine what's the next step.
