Common causes are:

  1. Outdated Authenticator app: Microsoft does not support app versions more than 12 months old. Update the app and turn on Settings > App updates.
  2. Notification or sync issues: In Authenticator, check Settings > Notification Settings and make sure Show notifications is turned on.
  3. Battery optimization: In Authenticator, go to Settings and select Turn off battery optimization.
  4. Network problems: Switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, and make sure Airplane mode is off. If using a VPN, disconnect it and test again.
  5. Device date/time issues: Make sure the device Date & time is correct and set automatically.
  6. Device or related app updates: Make sure the phone OS is up to date, and any related security apps such as Microsoft Defender or Intune Company Portal are also updated.

If the app is showing "Authentication did not complete", also check:

  • the app is unlocked
  • notifications are not silent or disabled
  • the device has internet access

If repeated sign-in attempts happened, Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication can temporarily block more attempts. In that case, wait and try again later, or use a different MFA method if one is available.

If this is a work or school account and the app keeps signing out or loops back to sign-in, contact the organization’s IT administrator. They may need to investigate sign-in logs or require MFA re-registration.

    Hi,

The location of the battery optimization setting depends on your phone model and Android version. If you cannot find Microsoft Authenticator in the list, try these steps:

    1. Open SettingsAppsMicrosoft Authenticator.
    2. Tap Battery (or Battery usage).
    3. Select Unrestricted / Don't optimize (the wording depends on the device).

If Microsoft Authenticator is not listed:

    • Open the app once and try again.
    • Make sure the app is updated from the Play Store.Hi, The location of the battery optimization setting depends on your phone model and Android version. If you cannot find Microsoft Authenticator in the list, try these steps:
