A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Common causes are:
- Outdated Authenticator app: Microsoft does not support app versions more than 12 months old. Update the app and turn on Settings > App updates.
- Notification or sync issues: In Authenticator, check Settings > Notification Settings and make sure Show notifications is turned on.
- Battery optimization: In Authenticator, go to Settings and select Turn off battery optimization.
- Network problems: Switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, and make sure Airplane mode is off. If using a VPN, disconnect it and test again.
- Device date/time issues: Make sure the device Date & time is correct and set automatically.
- Device or related app updates: Make sure the phone OS is up to date, and any related security apps such as Microsoft Defender or Intune Company Portal are also updated.
If the app is showing "Authentication did not complete", also check:
- the app is unlocked
- notifications are not silent or disabled
- the device has internet access
If repeated sign-in attempts happened, Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication can temporarily block more attempts. In that case, wait and try again later, or use a different MFA method if one is available.
If this is a work or school account and the app keeps signing out or loops back to sign-in, contact the organization’s IT administrator. They may need to investigate sign-in logs or require MFA re-registration.
