A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
For a Facebook account on a new phone, the Microsoft Authenticator entry is restored only if that Facebook account was previously added as a third-party account and backed up. Third-party accounts such as Facebook use a one-time password code, and that verification code entry is restored when backup and restore worked.
If nothing appeared after installing Authenticator on the new phone, use this path:
- In Microsoft Authenticator on the new phone, use Restore from backup or Begin recovery before signing in.
- Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account that was used to store the backup.
- If Restore from backup does not appear, remove or sign out of all accounts in Authenticator, then try restore again.
- If the Facebook entry restores, open Facebook on a computer, go to the two-factor authentication setup area, and use the code shown in Authenticator if Facebook asks for a verification code.
If the Facebook account still does not restore, the practical recovery path is to re-add Facebook to Authenticator from Facebook’s own two-step verification settings:
- On a computer, sign in to Facebook if possible.
- Go to Settings > Security and Login.
- In Two-Factor Authentication, select Edit for Use two-factor authentication.
- In Add a backup, choose Setup from Authentication app.
- In Microsoft Authenticator, select Add account > Other account (Google, Facebook, etc.).
- Scan the QR code from Facebook.
- Enter the verification code from Authenticator back into Facebook to finish setup.
If Facebook is requiring a code from the old Authenticator setup and there is no restored Facebook entry on the new phone, Microsoft Authenticator cannot generate that old code. In that case, recovery has to be completed through Facebook’s sign-in or two-factor recovery options, because the account must be re-linked from the Facebook side.
