Try these fixes in order for Word:
- Make sure Word is signed in with the account that has the Copilot license.
- In Microsoft 365 apps, confirm the signed-in account is the licensed one.
- If the file is from work or school, use the work or school account that has Copilot.
- Refresh the Microsoft 365 license in Word.
- In Word on Windows: File > Account > Update License.
- Close and restart all Microsoft 365 apps after the refresh.
- On Mac: open any Microsoft 365 app, select the app name menu > About <app name> > More Info... > Refresh License, then restart the apps.
- If using Word on the web, enable third-party cookies.
- Copilot license validation in web apps requires third-party cookies.
- In Edge: Settings and More > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Manage and delete cookies and site data > set Block third-party cookies to Off.
- Then refresh the browser page.
- Check where the file is stored.
- If the document is hosted in a third-party storage location, Copilot can show license validation or similar errors.
- Move or copy the file to OneDrive or SharePoint, then try again.
- If Copilot is missing after the error clears, check Word privacy settings.
- In Windows Word: File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
- Confirm Experiences that analyze your content is turned on.
- Confirm All connected experiences is turned on.
- If Word is managed by an organization, these settings may be controlled by IT.
- For business users on desktop Word, check the Microsoft 365 update channel.
- Copilot features are not available on Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel.
- In Word: File > Account and look in Product Information.
- If it shows Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, the device must be moved to Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel. The web apps can be used in the meantime.
- If the message still appears:
- Home users: contact Support.
- Business users: ask the Microsoft 365 admin to verify that Microsoft 365 Copilot is assigned, and have the admin contact Microsoft support if needed.
