Hi Guys
Firstly, many thanks for the interest shown in my dilemma, but the matter is now resolved …
After quite some time trawling through the Microsoft site I was able to make use of an online chat facility with one of its techies. He dialled into my PC and after doing some stuff via the system command prompt and the PowerShell app, I was back up and running with no more error messages about my licence.
Just for interest’s sake, this is the full history from which you can pick the bones at your leisure if the same thing is happening to others:
1. Years ago I had genuine copies of windows (from 1 through to 8) complete with a licence number(s) that came with me through all my custom builds over the years – some via myself and some via a local builder. When the opportunity came for my free Microsoft Windows Pro upgrade to 10, my licence number then became digital - which has also worked for Win 11 since its introduction - and which has been with me through many hardware changes and software rebuilds since.
2. Over the past few weeks many strange things were happening to my setup. I am a constant tweaker and I suspect that certain operating files had become damaged – either by myself of from malware. As a result, I carried out a complete overhaul of the system.
3. This entailed:
a. restore operations from many restore points;
b. following an error message about overheating, I put some more paste between the CPU and its cooling fan block;
c. upgraded the BIOS.
d. a clean installation of Win 11 Pro;
e. reinstallation of an older image created via the Microsoft backup facility;
f. took delivery of the latest Update - Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242).
4. All was working ok but then I noticed the activation error warning. This stated that I needed to 'Activate Windows' & 'Windows reported that no product key was found on your device. Error Code: 0xC004F213'.
