I have Excel on my task bar and it will not open to the files. It looks like it wants to and shows a very small fuzzy screen that look like it may be my files but hangs up

It sounds like Excel starts but freezes before the window fully opens.

Please clarify these:

Does Excel open if you right-click the taskbar icon and select "Excel" again?

Does the same thing happen when you double-click an Excel file from "File Explorer"?

Press Windows + R type excel /safe and press Enter. Does Excel open in Safe Mode?

Also, are you using Windows 10 or Windows 11?

I can't find any recent similar issues like yours, however, it is also possible that they haven't been widely reported yet.

In the meantime, I recommend reinstalling Windows 11 via Settings and performing an in-place upgrade. Here's how:

Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
In "Fix problem using Windows Update", click "Reinstall now".

This will download Repair Upgrade and reinstall Windows similar to an In-Place Upgrade, preserving your apps, files, and settings.

The process will download and restart your PC several times. This may take some time, so please be patient and do not interrupt the process.

Nothing I can think of is new or different....I went to look up something in Excel and it wouldn't open

I pay Microsoft annually, last charge was 99.99 that posted on 4/2/2026. When I go to Microsoft 365 it gives me two options: Modify or Uninstall.....What I noted was that on 7/24/26 I now have a Microsoft 365 CoPilot and also on 7/27/26 I now have a CoPilot App??? Could this be my problem in the Microsoft 365 was overridden?? I do not have this problem in opening my Word file

The Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot apps should not override Excel. They may have appeared after a recent Microsoft 365 update, but Excel should still remain installed.

Since Word opens normally, this looks more like an Excel-specific problem rather than a subscription issue.

Please select Modify. Then choose Quick Repair and let it finish. Do not select Uninstall.

Quick Repair will not delete your Word or Excel files.

If issue still persists:

Before installing, it’s a good idea to uninstall all existing versions of Office to avoid conflicts.

Here’s how:

Open the Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
Look for any version of Microsoft Office or Office apps, right-click, then choose Uninstall. Please uninstall all Office apps.
Once that’s done, restart your computer just to be safe.

Then, to reinstall Microsoft Office:

Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services
Sign in using the same Microsoft account linked to your license.
Find your Microsoft 365 Subscription and click the "Install".
That will download the installer for the Office apps, just run it and follow the steps.

After a complete repair and reinstall the problem still persists with the Excel not wanting to show. I can see a fuzzy small 1 1/2 by 1 inch just above the excel that appears to have the files in it. I am at a total loss as to what is happening as no other application is not working properly.

Any other idea that may help? Unfortunately this is the holds all my passwords so I really need to figure this out.

The small fuzzy box you described may actually be the Excel window opening in an incorrect size or position. Reinstalling Office may not reset the saved window position.

Please open Excel, then try these steps:

Hold Shift and right-click the Excel icon on the taskbar.

Select "Maximize."

If "Maximize" is not shown:

Press Alt + Tab until Excel is selected.

Press Windows + Up Arrow several times.

Does the small fuzzy window become full-sized, or does it remain unchanged?

Thank you for letting me know.

Since Excel will not open from the taskbar or File Explorer, please try repairing Office.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
If you see Microsoft Excel, select it and click End task.
Restart the computer.
Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
Click the three dots beside it, select Modify, then run Quick Repair.

This will not delete your Excel files.

After the repair, try opening Excel again. Also, does Word open normally, or does it have the same problem?

If same problem, please try manual repair:

Repair Office apps:

Press Windows + R, type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
Find Microsoft 365 or Office in the list, select it, then choose Change > Quick Repair.
If that doesn’t help, run the repair again but select Online Repair instead.

Check for updates:

Open any Office app (if it opens even briefly), go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
Restart your device after repair and try opening the apps again.

Using Windows 11.

Excel....when I go to Run and Type excel/safe this is what I get

"Windows cannot find excel/safe.

Excel file will not open from File Explorer.

Hopefully you can help me figure this out. Thanks
