"I have an active Microsoft 365 Family subscription expiring September 1, 2026. I purchased a 12‑month Microsoft 365 Personal retail key from Best Buy. The redemption page tells me to wait until my subscription expires instead of converting the key to Family time. Can this key be converted to my existing Family subscription, or exchanged for a Family renewal by paying the difference?"

Hi, @John Hargrave

A Microsoft 365 Personal retail key should normally offer two choices when redeemed on the same Microsoft account:

  • Keep Microsoft 365 Family and receive a reduced amount of Family subscription time.
  • Switch the subscription to Microsoft 365 Personal.

It will not provide a full 12-month Family renewal because the Family plan costs more. There is also no normal option to pay only the price difference during key redemption.

Since you are only being told to wait until September 1, 2026, please do not redeem the key using another Microsoft account.

  1. Was the current Family subscription purchased directly from Microsoft or through another company?
  2. Is recurring billing currently turned off?
  3. What is the exact message shown after entering the key? Please do not post the actual product key. Thanks!

If you prefer a full 12-month Family renewal, you would need to ask Best Buy whether the unused Personal key can be exchanged for a Family key.
