Copilot Markdown Code Blocks Not Rendering in Microsoft Edge (Works Correctly in Google Chrome)

I'm experiencing an issue in Microsoft Copilot when using Microsoft Edge.

Markdown code blocks are not displayed correctly. Instead of the actual code, I only see gray loading/skeleton placeholders. Regular text renders normally.

The same conversation and the same Microsoft account work correctly in Google Chrome, where code blocks are displayed without issues.

Troubleshooting performed:

  • Disabled hardware acceleration
  • Reset Edge flags
  • Restarted Edge
  • Inspected the page using DevTools

Technical findings:

  • <pre> and <code> elements exist in the DOM
  • Code content is present and accessible via innerText and textContent
  • CSS properties appear normal (display: block, visibility: visible, opacity: 1)
  • Browser console reports:

Cannot find module './src/CodeBlockStrings.json'

Expected behavior: Code blocks should render normally in Microsoft Edge, as they do in Google Chrome.

Actual behavior: Only gray skeleton placeholders are displayed instead of the code content.

Check the language settings in both browsers.

Code blocks work in English, but they do not seem to work in other languages.

    Hi @Bjørn Tore ,
But when both are set to English, it still happens :
    User's image

What could be the reason for that then?

Perhaps useful, I've added this to my instructions for my agent :

    OUTPUT FORMATTING RULE — MANDATORY

Do not use Markdown code blocks, fenced code blocks, triple backticks, inline backticks, or rich-text code components.

Present all code, JSON, XML, commands, expressions, formulas, stack traces, and technical examples as plain text only.

Use normal text lines with line-number prefixes, for example:

    01 | First line

    02 | Second line

    03 | Third line

Do not indent text in a way that could be interpreted as a Markdown code block.

Before sending a response, verify that it contains no code-block formatting or rich-text code components.

Place the line as low as possible in the agent instructions, so that it is passed as the last mandatory output line.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to respond and help investigate this issue.

A special thanks to Bjørn Tore for pointing me toward the browser language settings. That turned out to be the root cause.

In my case, Serbian (local language) was set as the primary language in Microsoft Edge. I changed English (United States) to the top of the language list, restarted Edge, and refreshed Copilot. Immediately after that, Markdown code blocks started rendering correctly and the gray skeleton placeholders disappeared.

So for anyone experiencing the same problem, it appears to be related to the browser language/locale rather than Edge itself.

    Hi Stefan Arsić,

As additional troubleshooting, you may want to test the behavior in:

    • An InPrivate window
    • A newly created Edge profile
    • Edge with all extensions disabled

If the issue persists across clean profiles and InPrivate sessions, please feel free to let me know.
