Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Dear @Kaela,
I understand how frustrating it is to be locked out of your account when the Microsoft Authenticator app is the only verification method presented.
When you lose connection to the Authenticator app (e.g., due to a new phone, reset, or broken sync), the resolution path depends entirely on whether your account is a Personal Microsoft Account or a Work/School (Business) Account.
Please follow the appropriate instructions below to regain access:
Option 1: Personal Microsoft Account (@outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com)
If you are signing into a personal account, Microsoft Support agents cannot bypass or reset Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for security reasons. You must use automated self-service recovery:
- Go to account.live.com/proofs/manage and enter your email.
- When prompted for Authenticator verification, click "I don't have access to my Microsoft Authenticator app" or "Sign in another way."
- If you have a backup recovery phone number or secondary email linked, select it to receive a security code.
- If you have no alternate verification methods available, select "I don't have any of these."
- This initiates a 34-day security info replacement process.
- Once this waiting period ends, you can attach a new phone or Authenticator app to regain full access.
Note: If you previously enabled Cloud Backup in the Authenticator app on an iOS or Android device, install the app on a phone, tap "Restore from backup," and sign in with your personal recovery account.
Please refer to this document: How to get a Microsoft account recovery code
Option 2: Work or School Account (Business / Microsoft 365 Tenant)
For business accounts managed by an organization, authentication settings can be reset directly:
If you are an Employee / User:
- Contact your company's IT Administrator or Microsoft 365 Admin.
- Ask them to go to the Microsoft Entra Admin Center (
entra.microsoft.com) > Users > Authentication methods. - Have them select your name and click "Require re-register multifactor authentication."
- The next time you sign in, you will be prompted to set up the Authenticator app from scratch.
If you are the only Global Administrator on the account:
Because no other admin exists to reset your MFA, you must contact the Microsoft Data Protection Team by phone via the official Microsoft Customer Service Numbers.
- State clearly to the automated system that you are the Global Administrator, you are locked out by Multi-Factor Authentication, and you are the only admin in the tenant.
- An agent will create an urgent service ticket and transfer you to the Data Protection team to verify tenant ownership and reset your authentication settings.
