Windows 11. When my laptop is idle, goes into sleep mode etc. The sign in screen will not let my use any of the options to sign in. I have to restart the computer each time, then it will recognize my finger print or pin.

    Hi ,

I'm Dyari. Thanks for reaching out.

In addition to the AI suggestions, when the sign-in screen becomes unresponsive, press Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B**. The screen may flash or make a sound as Windows resets the graphics driver. Then try the sign-in options again.

It is also recommended to install all pending updates. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates >install any available drivers.

Then, visit the laptop manufacturer’s support website and install the latest BIOS, chipset, graphics, and fingerprint-reader drivers for the exact laptop model.

This pattern points to Windows Hello sign-in not initializing correctly after sleep. Since restart consistently fixes it, focus on Windows Hello reset and biometric troubleshooting rather than a full Windows reset.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Sign in after a restart, then re-register the fingerprint.
      • Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello).
      • Select Remove, then set it up again.
      • If available, also select Add another and register an additional fingerprint.
    2. If fingerprint fails after sleep, use PIN or password to get in, then reset the PIN.
      • In Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > PIN (Windows Hello), use I forgot my PIN if needed.
      • Windows guidance also notes that PIN can be reset from the lock screen under Sign-in options.
    3. Check the fingerprint reader state and driver.
      • Make sure the fingerprint reader is clean and dry.
      • Open Device Manager and check that the sensor appears under Biometric devices.
      • If it is present, uninstall that biometric device, then restart the laptop so Windows reinstalls the driver.
    4. If the sign-in options stop responding after sleep, test whether the issue is limited to normal startup.
      • From the sign-in screen, hold Shift and select Power > Restart.
      • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
      • Press 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
      • If sign-in works there, basic drivers and default settings are not the cause, which helps narrow the issue.
    5. Restart the device normally whenever updates are pending.
      • If Windows shows updates, use Update and restart to complete them.
    6. If the biometric option is still unreliable, remove and re-enroll the Windows Hello method again.
      • In Settings > Sign-in options, remove the nonworking fingerprint enrollment and re-enroll it.
    7. Advanced step: restart the biometric service.
      • Risk: this changes Windows Hello sign-in configuration and requires administrator access.
      • First remove the PIN in Sign-in options.
      • Then open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
net stop wbiosrvc && net start wbiosrvc

      • Then test fingerprint sign-in again.

If the laptop is a Surface, also use the Surface app to check for driver and firmware updates, then install any available updates through Windows Update.
