Dear Microsoft Q&A Team,

I am experiencing an issue activating Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint on my Mac. Every time I attempt to sign in and activate my Microsoft 365 account, Word displays "Activating..." for a short period before showing the following error message:

Unknown Error An unknown error has occurred. The error code is: 0x0.

As a result, I am unable to complete the activation process and use the Office applications.

I have already attempted the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Verified that I am using the correct Microsoft account.
  • Closed and reopened Microsoft Word.
  • Restarted my Mac.
  • Confirmed that I have a stable internet connection.

Unfortunately, the issue persists.

System Information:

  • Device: Mac
  • Application: Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Error Code: 0x0
  • Issue: Activation fails with an "Unknown Error" during the activation process.

I have attached a screenshot of the error message for reference.

Could you please advise on the cause of this issue and recommend the appropriate steps to resolve it? If additional information or diagnostic logs are required, I would be happy to provide them.

Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to your guidance.

Kind regards,

Jeff Moloseni

Microsoft AutoUpdate is not to be found in your user Library folder. Instead, open the Library folder that is at the root of your hard disk, The path will look like Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/Microsoft AutoUpdate.
