Dear Microsoft Q&A Team,
I am experiencing an issue activating Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint on my Mac. Every time I attempt to sign in and activate my Microsoft 365 account, Word displays "Activating..." for a short period before showing the following error message:
Unknown Error An unknown error has occurred. The error code is: 0x0.
As a result, I am unable to complete the activation process and use the Office applications.
I have already attempted the following troubleshooting steps:
Unfortunately, the issue persists.

Could you please advise on the cause of this issue and recommend the appropriate steps to resolve it? If additional information or diagnostic logs are required, I would be happy to provide them.

Microsoft AutoUpdate is not to be found in your user Library folder. Instead, open the Library folder that is at the root of your hard disk, The path will look like Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/Microsoft AutoUpdate.

I solved my problem another way. I opted to simply buy ms365 again. I was given the option to Renew, even though I was scheduled for automatic renewal in 3 weeks. I downloaded excel, power point and word, and they replaced what was already on my MacBook Pro, and I am now able to save documents again. Curious that this happened after MANY years of using 365, but I am back at work and thankful for that.
But thank you John for the correct pathway name up above, perhaps the MS folks can update their records also to be more helpful.

I have the same problem, after daily use it suddenly won't save. I read all the solutions in the site but MAU is not available on my Mac or in the library. I have Mac 15.6, excel 16.64, cannot complete an excel update or active MS365. I am current on MS and my renewal is August 25.

If even that doesn't work, the issue you have encountered may require other actions, and you may be better off starting your own thread. Use the Ask a question option (see the screen shot below). Good luck.
I solved my problem by buying 365 again, as an option to renew , downloaded the apps and all is normal again. I was up for automatic renewal soon and may end up paying twice but small price for getting back to work again! My new 365 apps now are named « excel for Mac » which is different.
The 0x0 error is a widely reported problems with the Office apps on an Apple Mac at the moment due to the July 13 update

What version of Microsoft Office do you have, is that a subscription to Microsoft 365 or a standalone version of Office like Office 2019, 2021 or 2024.

At the top left of your Desktop, click the Apple icon and select 'About this Mac', what version of MacOS is installed on your computer?
