    Hi,

If your modem is not getting a ranging response, this is usually related to the modem’s connection to your internet service provider.

Try unplugging the modem from power for 1–2 minutes, then plug it back in and wait for it to reconnect. Make sure the coaxial or Ethernet cables are securely connected and not damaged. If you are using a splitter, try connecting the modem directly to the wall outlet. Also, check the modem’s status lights to see if the upstream, downstream, or online light is blinking or off. Finally, check if other devices connected to the same network are also offline.

If the modem still cannot obtain a ranging response, contact your Internet Service Provider. They can check the signal levels and connection from their end and determine whether there is an outage, signal problem, or issue with the modem.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Restart the modem and router.
      • Unplug the router power cable.
      • Unplug the modem power cable. If the modem has a backup battery and the lights stay on, remove the battery.
      • Wait at least 30 seconds.
      • Reconnect power to the modem and wait for the lights to stop blinking.
      • Reconnect power to the router and wait a few minutes for both devices to fully power on.
    2. Check the physical connections.
      • Make sure the cable between the modem and router is plugged in securely.
      • If using Ethernet to the PC, check the cable between the PC and router and look for damage.
      • If another Ethernet cable is available, test with that cable.
    3. Check Windows network status.
      • Open Settings > Network & internet.
      • On Windows 11, the Ethernet connection should show Connected.
      • If it shows an error such as Action needed, select Ethernet to review the connection settings.
    4. If the PC is on Wi-Fi, test whether the router is responding.
      • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
      • Run ipconfig and find the Default gateway for the Wi-Fi network.
      • Run ping <DefaultGateway>.
      • If replies are returned, the PC can reach the router, so the issue may be with the modem or the ISP.
      • If there is no reply, the issue is likely between the PC and the router.
    5. If possible, connect the PC directly to the modem with an Ethernet cable.
      • If internet works this way, the problem is likely with the router.
      • If it still does not work, the problem is more likely with the modem or ISP.
    6. If the connection remains poor or unavailable, contact the ISP.
      • The guidance for home networks is to contact the ISP when modem or connection issues continue after cable checks and restart steps.
