How many devices can use my microsoft 365 subscription? I have 2 and am about to purchase a third.

A subscription to Microsoft 365 belongs to the Microsoft account which purchased the subscription. It does not belong to a person or to a computer.

With your Microsoft account, you can install Microsoft 365 on an unlimited number of devices. However, you can only be signed in on a maximum of 5 devices at any one time.

A subscription to Microsoft 365 Family can be shared with up to 5 Microsoft accounts belonging to people in your household. Each of them can install Microsoft 365 on an unlimited number of devices. However, they can only be signed in on a maximum of 5 devices at any one time.

Unlimited installs You can install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc. on:

Windows PCs

Macs

iPhones

iPads

Android phones/tablets

✔ Active sign‑in limit

Up to 5 devices signed in at the same time

If you sign in on a 6th device, Microsoft 365 will simply sign you out of one of the older devices — no penalty, no data loss.

✔ Cloud services

Your OneDrive 1 TB works across all devices.

For Microsoft 365 for home:

• Microsoft 365 Personal: can be installed on all devices and signed in on five devices at the same time.
• Microsoft 365 Family: each person on the subscription can install it on all their devices and be signed in on five devices at the same time. It can be shared with up to six people total.

So if there are currently 2 devices in use, adding a 3rd device is supported.

If more than five devices are signed in at the same time for one person, the first device is signed out automatically to stay within the sign-in limit.
