If I have a nearly identical folder on two machines which are backed up in onedrive, does one drive keep the most recent copy from whichever machine has that copy?

Yes OneDrive syncs the most recent version based on timestamp. Whichever machine saves the file last, that version wins and gets synced across both machines.

A few important notes:

OneDrive also keeps version history (up to 30 days on personal, 180 days on Business) — so old versions aren't lost

If both machines edit the same file simultaneously offline, OneDrive creates a conflict copy so nothing gets overwritten

You can view/restore older versions by right-clicking the file → Version History

Because OneDrive is not a backup app, it sync your files and changes to your files to all your devices, if you have OneDrive enabled on both devices and the folders are stored inside the OneDrive folder in the same location on both devices, then OneDrive will automatically sync the files between both devices and your OneDrive account online, and any amendments you make to a file will be synced to OneDrive online and the other device automatically.

OneDrive also has the ability to revert to a previous version of a file if you need to do that, but in general, the latest version of a file will be synced between both your devices.
