    Hi,

The issue may be due to corrupted Windows Settings components, which can cause Settings to get stuck on the gear screen and prevent you from updating Windows. Try the following steps:

    Reset Settings via PowerShell (Admin)

Right-click the Start Menu and choose Windows PowerShell (Admin).

Copy and paste the command below, then hit Enter:

    Get-AppxPackage windows.immersivecontrolpanel | Reset-AppxPackage

    Restart your computer then check.

Run SFC and DISM to check and repair system corrupted files:

Open Command Prompt as an administrator.

Copy and paste each command below, then press Enter. Please run each command one at a time:

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    sfc /scannow

    Restart your PC

If the issue continues, try a repair in-place upgrade while keeping your files and apps. This helps fix or replace any corrupted files that may be causing the problem.

Note: Before doing so, unplug all unnecessary external peripherals connected to your PC, and temporarily disable any third-party antivirus program to avoid interference.

    1. Click the 'Download now' button under 'Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)' and save it to your computer: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 (Click the third 'Download Now' button.)
    2. Run the downloaded file and select 'Yes' when prompted by User Account Control (UAC).
    3. Accept the Microsoft Software License Terms if you agree.
    4. On the 'What do you want to do?' screen, select 'Upgrade this PC now' and click 'Next.'

(This stage will download, verify, and create the Windows 10 or 11 installation media.) It will take some time to complete.

    1. Under 'Choose what to keep,' select 'Keep personal files and apps,' then click 'Next.'
    2. Click 'Install,' and the installation will begin. (This process will take some time, so please be patient.)

    Try this in order:

    1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
      • Next to Windows Update, select Run.
      • If Settings will not open normally, try opening Settings with Windows key + I.
    2. Restart the PC, then try Windows Update again.
      • A restart can clear apps or services that are blocking the update process.
    3. Check free disk space.
      • Windows needs at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit OS or 20 GB for a 64-bit OS to upgrade.
    4. Repair Windows system files.
      • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
      • Run:
             DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
             sfc /scannow

      • Wait for both commands to finish, then try Windows Update again.
    5. If updates are still stuck, reset Windows Update components.
      • Warning: these are advanced command-line steps and require administrator permissions.
      • Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these one at a time:
             net stop bits
             net stop wuauserv
             ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
             ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
             net start bits
             net start wuauserv

      • Restart the PC after the commands complete.
    6. If the Settings app itself is hanging on the gear screen, use the Windows Update recovery option if it becomes available:
      • Open Settings > System > Recovery.
      • In Fix problems with Windows Updates, select Reinstall now.
    7. If the problem continues, perform a clean restart of Windows to rule out software conflicts.
      • A clean restart starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs.
    8. If none of the above works, use a repair install of Windows 11.
      • Microsoft also provides a clean installation tool on the Windows 11 software download page. Read the notes carefully before using it.
