I got a new phone and when I logged into the Authenticator app, it told me I needed a code for my Authenticator app to log into my Authenticator app which I can’t do that and I need the Authenticator app for college. I’m not able to get into my email or anything with FASFA and this is really important that I get into these things and nothing is working. Please help.

    Hi Acelynn,

Have you tried other methods of authentication for getting into your account? Like email and SMS?

If you are still not able to access it, or don't have set up alternative methods of authentication, you can contact your university IT department. They can help you to get into your account, by temporarily disabling your 2FA or any other support, which would help to get into your account.

For a college or school account on a new phone, the fastest supported path is to use another sign-in method if one is available, or have the school IT help desk reset the MFA/security info.

    1. At the sign-in screen, check whether a different verification method is offered.
      • If available, choose another method instead of Authenticator.
      • Microsoft guidance says to try a different verification method when one is configured.
    2. If the account was restored to the new phone, open the work or school account entry inside Microsoft Authenticator and sign in again.
      • For work or school accounts, only the account name is restored.
      • It is expected to show “Sign in to add your account.”
    3. If access to the account is still possible through a browser, go to the Security info page or Additional security verification page and replace the old phone entry.
      • Delete the old phone/security info.
      • Select Add sign-in method.
      • Choose Phone or set up Microsoft Authenticator again on the new device.
    4. If no alternate method works and the old phone is unavailable, contact the school IT help desk or admin and ask them to clear or reset the MFA settings for the account.
      • Microsoft support content states that for a lost, stolen, or unavailable device, the organization’s help desk can clear the settings.
      • After the settings are cleared, the next sign-in prompts re-registration for two-factor verification.
    5. If text codes are offered but not arriving:
      • Do not make excessive repeated requests.
      • Check whether the phone blocks texts from unknown numbers.
      • Make sure the number on the Security info page is correct.
      • VOIP numbers cannot be used for verification codes.

Important details for the new phone scenario:

    • For work or school accounts, Authenticator does not fully restore sign-in capability by backup alone; the account usually must be signed in again on the new phone.
    • If the account is enforced to use a passkey and self-service passkey setup is not allowed, the admin or help desk must provide the approved recovery or registration process.
