If the Authenticator prompt is not appearing on the new computer or tablet, try these checks first:

    1. Unlock the Authenticator app on the mobile device that should receive the prompt. If the app is locked, the approval box might not appear.
    2. Check notifications for Microsoft Authenticator. If notifications are silent or disabled, the prompt may not show. Also check for a texted authentication code that may have arrived silently.
    3. Update Authenticator to the latest version. Older versions can cause sign-in failures.
    4. Check connectivity on the phone or tablet that has Authenticator. If needed, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
    5. Verify date and time on the device are correct.

If this is a personal Microsoft account and reinstalling did not help, remove the old Authenticator registration and add it again:

    1. Sign in to https://account.microsoft.com.
    2. Go to Security info.
    3. Remove the Authenticator App sign-in method.
    4. Add Authenticator App again and complete setup.

If this is a work or school account:

    • Notifications can be controlled by the organization.
    • If the old device is still registered or the app was reinstalled and is now stuck in a loop, go to the two-step verification area of My Apps or the organization’s company portal and turn off verification for the old device.
    • If access to the old device is gone or sign-in methods cannot be changed, the school or IT admin must require MFA re-registration or reset the authentication method.

If the message shown is “Authentication did not complete”, the supported causes are: app locked, silent notifications, outdated app, network issues, incorrect date/time, or needing a password reset.
