I have renewed and paid my Microsoft personal subscription and believe I have installed it. However, when I go into my Excel files, the software will not let me save the new data.

" ... and believe I have installed it."

When you open your Start menu, do you see an entry for Excel? If you see an entry for Excel, that means you have installed Microsoft 365.

Next, open Excel from your Start menu, and go to File > Account > User Information (in the upper left corner). Sign in with the username and password of the Microsoft account that purchased your subscription to Microsoft 365. This will activate your software.

Now you should see your user account in User Information. If not, restart your computer.

Are you using the Office apps on a Windows PC or on an Apple Mac computer?

    1

If you are using the Office apps on a Windows PC.

    Open Word.

At the top right of Word, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your subscription then recognized correctly.

If that does not resolve the problem, please provide a screenshot of any error you are seeing when you try to open Excel.

    2

If you are using the Office apps on an Apple Mac device.

At the top left of your Desktop, click the Apple icon and select 'About this Mac', what version of MacOS is installed on your computer?

Also, please provide a screenshot of any error you see when you try to open Excel.

If Excel will not let data be saved after renewing Microsoft 365 Personal, the most relevant checks are licensing refresh and common Excel save blockers.

    1. Verify the apps are activated with the same Microsoft account used for the subscription.
      • Open an Office app.
      • Sign out, then sign back in with the Microsoft account tied to the subscription.
      • If using Mac, open the app name on the menu bar, select About the app, select More Info…, then select Refresh License.
      • Close all Microsoft 365 apps and reopen them.
    2. Make sure Office is online and activated.
      • Microsoft 365 desktop apps need internet access for initial activation.
      • If the apps are not connected to the internet regularly, they can enter reduced functionality mode and show unlicensed behavior.
      • Reconnect to the internet and sign in to reactivate.
    3. Try immediate Excel save workarounds.
      • In Excel, select File > Save As and save with a new file name.
      • Try saving the workbook to another location, such as the local hard disk.
      • Create a new workbook and try saving it to the original folder. If that fails, the folder or drive may be the issue.
      • Save the file as a different Excel file type, such as .xlsx or .xlsm instead of .xls.
    4. Check for file or folder permission problems.
      • Excel needs Read, Write, Modify, and Delete permissions for the target folder.
      • If the file or location is read-only, or if a network/external drive connection failed, Excel may not save changes.
    5. Check for storage or file lock issues.
      • Confirm the destination drive has enough free space.
      • If the workbook is shared and another instance of Excel or another user is saving it at the same time, the file may be locked.
    6. Test whether add-ins or security software are blocking saves.
      • Start Excel in Safe Mode and try saving again. If saving works there, a third-party add-in or startup file is likely causing the problem.
      • Temporarily deactivate antivirus software and test saving again, because antivirus scanning can interrupt Excel save operations.
    7. If the issue started after reinstalling or changing editions, check whether the installed product matches the subscription.
      • If a one-time purchase of Office 2016 was installed instead of Microsoft 365, newer Microsoft 365 features are not available. Microsoft 365 includes subscription-based features, while Office 2016 only receives security and performance updates.

If the problem is specifically that Save or Save As is greyed out after renewal, the highest-value first steps are:

    • sign out and back in with the correct Microsoft account,
    • refresh the license,
    • restart all Office apps,
    • then try Save As to a new local file name.
