A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
This is usually an authentication loop: the account asks for a code from Microsoft Authenticator or email, but access to that method is not available yet.
Try these steps in order:
- On the sign-in screen, look for Use a different way to sign in, Show more verification options, or I don't have any of these.
- If another method is already attached to the account, use that instead of the app.
- If the verification code is being sent to an alternate Microsoft email account, use two private/InPrivate browser windows:
- In the first private window, sign in to the account that is asking for the code.
- When prompted for the code, leave that window open.
- Open a second private/InPrivate window.
- Sign in to the alternate email account there and get the code.
- Return to the first window and enter the code.
- If access to the old phone number or email is lost, select I don't have any of these during sign-in and follow the prompts to replace the security info.
- If all security info is replaced, sign-in access is delayed for 30 days.
- If current security info becomes available during that time, using it will cancel the update.
- If the code is not arriving:
- Check Junk/Spam.
- Avoid repeated code requests, because excessive requests can cause a temporary block.
- If the phone blocks texts from unknown numbers, change that setting and request another code.
- If the account was flagged for unusual activity, codes may not be delivered until the issue is resolved.
- If blocked with Try another verification method:
- Try a different verification method already connected to the account.
- Try a different network, such as switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
- Wait at least 24 hours before trying again, and if needed wait longer, up to 1 week. Repeated attempts can extend the block.
- If none of the above works:
- Use the Microsoft Sign-in helper.
- If password is also unavailable and no security methods can be accessed, submit the account recovery form.
- Microsoft support agents cannot send verification codes or change account details for security reasons.
Important: Do not change all security info at the same time unless necessary, because the account may be restricted for 30 days.
