Missing USB dongle - Can microsoft program a new one for me?

Question

Hi, I have a Microsoft 800 series wireless keyboard and 1000 series wireless mouse. Their details are:

Keyboard:

Series 800, Model 1455

Mouse:

Series 1000, Model 1454

As I notice that there is a lot in common between the mouse and keyboard numbers I wondered if you could use this information to program a new USB dongle for my keyboard and mouse, in a similar manner in which I can get a new door lock cut for my car keys by giving the car manufacturer my car VIN number.

Now there's a challenge - can you take it up?

I can get why you want to get a new dongle, given that it's such a small thing while keyboard and mouse are still in good condition. Your idea (and comparison) is interesting, but to not waste your time, the answer is No: The serial numbers and PIDs you supplied cannot be used to program a new USB dongle.

2. The numbers you provided identify the devices' hardware, but they cannot be used like a vehicle VIN to create a replacement receiver. What you gave are more like the car's license plate.

I thought that that's probably what you'd say, but it was worth asking the question. I spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone to MS on August 17th trying to get them to answer the same question. I was passed to 5 different people, all of whom didn't know the answer. I was finally given a web page link which I've yet to follow.

The question was quite a simple one really, but trying to find someone who could give me a definitive answer proved not to be so easy. The help desks all appear to relate to software (unsurprisingly) and questions relating to hardware manufacture and production (let alone record keeping) are not catered for. In my case it's a pity, but from MS's standpoint understandable as it would be so rarely, if at all, used by customer services/technical support.

I enjoyed giving you all something else to think about.
