my Windows Security Scan stops before completion, and sometimes crashes

Hello,

I do daily scans on my laptop (quick and full)

But just today, every time I do a quick scan, before it finishes it reverses back 1 second on the timer but the "files scanned" keeps going then freezes. It then stops/crashes for some reason but easily boots back when I click the "restart now" on the image shown below. Same thing on full scans but it happens around the start of the scan.

Also, once the "your IT administrator has limited access to some areas of this app windows defender" prompt appeared too.

I tried most of the recommendations I searched, I deleted both third-party antivirus (that I never used) and I have no school/work accounts connected at all. I'm getting very anxious about it, is there anyone that can help with this issue please?

The behavior points to two separate issues:

    1. The Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan is stopping before completion.
    2. The Windows Security app UI may also be malfunctioning, especially since the message "Threat service has stopped. Restart it now." appears and the "Your IT administrator has limited access..." prompt showed up even though no work or school account is connected.

    Use this order:

    1. Update Defender and Windows first
      • Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates > Check for updates.
      • Then open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      • If available, also install Optional updates. This is important because scan crashes can be tied to Defender engine or definition issues.
    2. Restart the PC, then run the scan with as little else open as possible
      • Close non-essential apps before scanning.
      • For best results, restart Windows and run the scan immediately before opening other apps. Full scans use significant processor and memory, and open apps can slow or destabilize the scan.
    3. Check whether the scan is being stopped or crashing Open Event Viewer and review Defender scan events:
      • Event ID 1000 = scan started
      • Event ID 1001 = scan finished
      • Event ID 1002 = scan stopped before finishing
Also check for restart or power-related interruptions:
      • In the System log, review Event IDs 6005, 6006, 6007, 6008 for restarts.
      • Power-state changes that can interrupt scans include 107, 42, 507, 506, 105.
    4. Make sure the laptop is plugged in during scans Scheduled full scans can stop when the device is running on battery. If the device is unplugged, Defender can stop the scan before completion.
    5. Check free disk space Defender needs available disk space to remove and quarantine malware. Low space, especially on drive C, can prevent a scan from completing.
    6. If full scans fail early, reduce scan load where possible Full scans can take much longer on systems with many files, especially large archives such as ZIP or CAB files. A large number of archive files can also contribute to memory-related scan failures.
    7. If the Windows Security app still shows limited access or keeps failing, repair the Windows Security UI A Microsoft Q&A resolution for the "Your IT administrator has limited some areas of this app" issue is to install SecurityHealthSetup as administrator, then restart if needed.
    8. If the problem continues after updates and restart, report it if running preview builds A Microsoft Q&A case for repeated Defender full-scan crashes on Insider/preview builds identified this as potentially tied to a Defender engine regression, with the next step being Feedback Hub.

If the immediate goal is to confirm whether scans are actually failing versus the UI freezing, Event Viewer is the fastest way to verify that. If Event ID 1002 appears repeatedly, the scan is stopping before completion rather than only the progress display freezing.
