A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
If Microsoft Authenticator is stuck in a loop asking for a code that can only be obtained after signing in, use another verification method if one is available.
- On the sign-in screen, look for Use a different way to sign in, Show more verification options, or I don't have any of these.
- If another method is listed, choose SMS, email, or another registered option and complete sign-in with that method.
- If the code is being sent to another Microsoft email account such as Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or MSN, open that second account in a separate InPrivate/private browsing window so both accounts stay signed in at the same time.
- If verification messages are not arriving, check the correct mailbox, including Junk Email, and confirm the security info is correct on the Security basics page by selecting Update info.
- Avoid repeated code requests. Too many attempts can trigger a temporary block.
- If blocked, try another network, such as switching between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or wait 24 hours before trying again. In some cases, waiting longer, up to 1 week, is required.
If no alternate method is available and only Authenticator is offered, use the Microsoft sign-in helper: Sign-in helper
For work or school accounts, if access is still blocked, the organization’s Help desk may need to clear or reset MFA settings.
Do not approve prompts or enter codes that were not requested.
