A Microsoft 365 subscription is not a lifetime product. Microsoft 365 is always a subscription, and if Office is showing expired or asking to purchase Microsoft 365, the first step is to confirm what was actually purchased.
- Sign in to the Services & subscriptions page using the Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Check whether the product appears there:
- If Microsoft 365 appears, review its status. If it is expired, it must be renewed to continue using the subscription version.
- If no Microsoft 365 subscription appears, the purchase may have been a one-time purchase of Office instead of Microsoft 365.
- If a one-time purchase was bought and Microsoft 365 prompts are appearing, open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and switch the license to the one-time purchase license.
- If the product was bought from a third party such as Apple, Google, or a retailer, billing and subscription management must be handled through that provider directly.
- If the subscription notice still appears after renewing or buying, and the purchase was a physical box or card, the product key may still need to be entered before the subscription starts.
If the current goal is to stop using Microsoft 365 and use a non-subscription Office license instead, the documented path is:
- Go to Subscriptions and turn off recurring billing.
- After the subscription expires, buy a one-time purchase of Office.
- Open an Office app and switch the license to begin using the one-time purchase.
